Beauty By Ninni
Hi everyone! Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Ninni Mighty and I have been doing makeup and hair for as long as I can remember. I started off with friends and family in Sweden, where I grew up, then about 20 years ago I decided to go to L.A and perfect it and never looked back!
I have been with the Blowout team from day one and thought it was about time I started sharing some of my ideas and beauty tips. I’ve asked some of my extremely talented friends in the industry to come onboard and share some of their secrets too… and guess what? They said YES!
First meet Angela...
Angela Stewart is a make-up artist and hairstylist that I’ve known for a long time! She too has over 20 years of experience in the industry. Angela's passion to educate and teach people about styling afro hair has grown over the past couple of years. She is gentle and patient and loves working with natural products. A true teacher...
When Angela grew up, in the 70's & 80's, she didn't feel there was anyone to talk to about her hair. Those she looked towards as teachers or experts didn't have a clue. She says, in hindsight, it was apparent that the reason for this was because they thought her hair needed to be straight first. The Media portrayed those who wore their hair in it's natural Afro form as some kind of Rebel and outside of “society”.
There is no mystery to Afro Hair Care just a lot of misconceptions and myths. This is why Angela had chosen to become an Afro Hair Coach and spread the knowledge of what she has discovered on her journey with her own hair and ultimately herself and her clients.
Angela’s Top Tips for Natural Afro Hair Care.
1. Ditch the Comb!
In order to reveal your true curl pattern, reduce scalp soreness, stop breakage and even stop a crying child, put away the comb/brush and get used to using your fingers to gently stroke through the hair during your Wash/Condition routine. Release any tangles using only your fingers and patience!
Best done when wet, add your favourite oil or styling product gently pulling your fingers through the hair in one direction only.
2. Elastic Fantastic!
Late night and you still have to put your hair into a night-time protective style? Have a small spray bottle of water nearby, scented with a few drops of your favourite essential oil to spritz the section of hair you want to braid/twist. Take special care of misting the ends of your hair.
The water softens your hair (making it easier to style), while the oil adds a coating (a film of oil) to seal in the water and stop your hair from drying out. This reduces breakages and aids healthy hair ends.
3. Blow it out!
Want to keep the definition AND get some length?
Do step one, then grab your hair dryer! 5 minutes on High at full blast (blows out the excess water), 2 mins on medium at full blast (further drying the hair a little more), 2 - 4 mins using your fingers as an afro comb gently stretching each section of hair!
4. Take your Time!
The no.1 reason we have damaged hair is because we rush. It is not something that can be done in 10 minutes, although the good news is, the more you train your hair to be used to being in it’s curls, the faster it can be done..
5. Be consistent!
It’s so easy to get discouraged especially when we are used to comparing ourselves to someone with a different hair type that doesn’t take long to comb. Remember that you are learning a totally new skill and for that you need to have patience. You’re on the right track, don’t give up!!
Follow these tips and you won’t just love the skin you’re in but also love the hair you have! NATURAL IS BEAUTIFUL!
